about
Over nearly two decades of superb music-making, Grant Phabao grew to be a prime purveyor of Jamaican Soul, wether labeled "ska", "bluebeat", "rocksteady", "reggae", etc. With the Paris DJs label, he managed to cross the rigid boundaries of music categorization with an astonishing quantity of high-quality productions and remixes in many styles, with a high-order mastery in reggae, ska and afrofunk.
American MC RacecaR comes from Chicago but is now based in Paris. The man already has a 15-years career behind but never stops. He's part of too many projects to list, quite different from one another, still all in the Hip Hop realm. He'll be playing this weekend at the Transmusicales de Rennes with the jazz/hip hop band Sax Machine. RacecaR is a hard-working, abundantly talented rhymester and it's no surprise the spotlight keeps on getting bigger on him these days.
The goal of Grant Phabao and RacecaR's collaboration was not from day one to be in competition with their other projects, or to jump on the beatmaking bandwagon, but instead to explore where both of their musical worlds could meet.
What if they tried recording one's hip hop rhymes over the other's reggae, ska or afrofunk productions?
Two singles have already been released from sessions recorded earlier this year, two heavily funky tunes with an "afrofunk meets hip hop" flavor: 'Return Of The Dig-Fu' and 'Rock Your Boat'. The former, first released as a digital single, was then compiled in the first Paris DJs funk/soul selection 'Killas, Thrillas & Chillas'. The latter is only available in a t-shirt format named Paris DJs Wearplay, where the design on the clothing represents the single, while the music is only available as a bundle download with the t-shirt.
This third single from the duo explores this time a different blend, with the lyricist's groovy rhymes recorded over one of Grant Phabao's heavy one drop reggae riddims, and featuring Parisian activist from the Chinese Man label Taiwan MC on guest vocals. A true Jamaican singer in the heart, Taiwan adds a catchy hook to the tune and the resulting track is pure, burning, smokin', cookin' music. Don't miss the man, he'll be playing in Paris at le Nouveau Casino this friday (dec 5), to celebrate the upcoming release of his second EP 'Diskodub'.
With extraordinary French illustrator Ben Hito at he controls for the visual art once again, let's just hope all those amazing Grant Phabao & RacecaR collaborations will see the light on vinyl soon…
